What Is Pancreatitis in Dogs?
The pancreas is an organ in the abdominal cavity.
One of its roles is producing digestive enzymes, which help break down food products. When this normal process goes awry, the pancreas can become inflamed. This is a condition called pancreatitis.
Pancreatitis in dogs is an inflammatory reaction within the pancreas that can result in abdominal pain, inappetence, and vomiting.
Affected dogs may display a praying position. In this position, the dog will raise their hind end in the air and bow their head down towards their front legs.
Pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas, is the most common pancreas problem in dogs and can range from mild digestive upset to life-threatening organ damage.
What the Pancreas Does
The pancreas is a small gland located near the stomach that plays a crucial role in digestion and blood sugar regulation. It produces digestive enzymes to break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, and hormones like insulin to regulate blood sugar levels. Normally, these enzymes activate in the small intestine, but if they activate prematurely, they can damage the pancreas itself and surrounding tissues, leading to pancreatitis
